What documentation will I need for a Nicko cruise?

In general, you will need your cruise confirmation which will be sent to you approximately 14 days prior to departure, a valid passport, plus any required visa and vaccination certificates. Please refer to the General Information section for more detailed information.

Are children allowed on board?

On board VASCO DA GAMA, families with children can enjoy a host of different benefits. Children under 16 years travel free when accompanied by two full-paying adults. There are also attractive offers for single travellers with children on all our departures. The children’s area on board VASCO DA GAMA extends out over two decks.

What is the currency used on board?

The currency on board is Euro.

Can I exchange currency on board?

Money cannot be exchanged on the ship.

Is there a dress code on board the ship?

We recommend wearing smart casual clothing for the evening and smarter attire for the Gala Dinner. More relaxed attire can be worn during the day for sightseeing and general relaxation around the ship. It is recommended to wear non-slip shoes on the outside decks.

Are vaccines necessary to travel with Nicko cruises?

It is important for guests to check with your family physician about infection prevention and vaccinations as well as other prophylactic measures. If special vaccinations are mandatory on your cruise route, we will notify you at the time of booking and details will be confirmed in our travel documents. Each guest is responsible for meeting the entry requirements at each of the respective destinations.

How does dining work?

Our pricing includes full board on our ocean ships including:

  • Generous breakfast with coffee, tea and juices in a variety of restaurants
  • Buffets, demonstration cooking or á la carte menus served at the table (depending on the restaurant)
  • Flexible meal times with free choice of seating
  • Coffee and cake depending on the daily programme

What activities and entertainment are available on a Nicko cruise?

At Nicko Cruises, we have always put shore excursions at the very heart of our programme. With our great range of excursions, which can be reserved in advance, you can explore the destination in small groups, with freedom to explore thanks to our convenient whisper audio systems. You will find a small selection of the possible excursions described in our itineraries.

Our very own “Hollywood” on the sea provides the best entertainment. The theatre extends over two decks and with a full programme of musical entertainment guests won’t cease to be amazed.

What amenities are included in my cabin?

Each cabin grade is equipped with a variety of amenities and this will depend on the ship and the cabin category you choose. For a more details on of cabins categories and amenities please see Nicko Fleet

What room services are available?

World Voyager offers a room service facility for light snacks and refreshments.

What power sockets are used on board?

All our cruise ships feature 2-pin (round pin) Continental style plug (220 volt-60 Hz).

Is smoking allowed on the ship?

Smoking is only permitted in designated areas on the outside decks. All interior areas such as restaurants, lounges, cabins, cabin balconies, corridors are non-smoking areas. This also applies to the use of all types of e-cigarettes.

Do you need to tip?

For peace of mind, we include tips in the price of your cruise

Is there a laundry service available on the ship?

A laundry and ironing service is available onboard VASCO DA GAMA for an additional charge.

Can I send letters or call from the ship?

You can send post while on board. The post will usually be mailed when we reach the next port. Postcards and postage stamps can be purchased at the reception desk, but please bear in mind that prices on board may often be more expensive than ashore.

You can make calls on board from cabin to cabin. It is also possible to call ashore via a satellite link. The costs of this, however, are high and we recommend using your own mobile phone (please check with your network provider for information on roaming charges).

Is there internet access on board?

VASCO DA GAMA is equipped with a satellite reception system and offers WIFI internet access. The cost of this has been included in your cruise fare and is applicable to one registered device.

Are port taxes included in the price of the cruise?

Yes

Does Nicko cruises have a cancellation policy?

What languages are spoken on board?

The languages spoken on board are English and German.

Are Nicko cruises ships suitable for wheelchair users?

The ships are comfortable as possible, but there will of course be staircases, as well as narrow doors and corridors. Even boarding or disembarking from the ship is usually via narrow gangways, which are not always at ground level and, depending on the tide, can also be very steep. If you have limited mobility, an ocean cruise on our ship may not be recommended. In some cases severe weather conditions may prevent tenders from operating or shore leave may be refused for safety reasons. This decision of the captain is final. Our crew is of course on hand to help, however, please bear in mind that our onboard employees are not trained caregivers and are not permitted to carry out any nursing activities. For safety reasons and to review requirements, please let us know if you have any specific needs, limited mobility or other physical limitations prior to making your booking. Should you have any limitations that prevent you from taking part in the sea rescue exercise, please also let us know before departure. If you require specialised help, you must travel with a companion. Guests who are wheelchair-dependent must bring their own collapsible wheelchair with them. Please note that the number of guests per cruise who are wheelchair-dependent is limited for safety reasons and embarkation may be refused without prior notification.

What drinks are included within the fare?

A beverage package is included in the fare which includes:

  • House wine by the glass
  • House sparkling wine by the glass
  • Port, Madeira and Sherry
  • Draft and bottles beers plus non-alcoholic beers
  • All non-alcoholic cocktails
  • Aperitifs
  • Soft drinks
  • Mineral water
  • Filter coffee, cappuccino, espresso, hot chocolate add tea

As the fresh water on board ships is always stored in tanks, we recommend not drinking the tap water and that you use the mineral water in your cabin and, if necessary, get mineral water from the bar, in the restaurant or at the coffee point instead. The tap water is perfectly suitable for brushing teeth.

Does Nicko cruises cater for dietary restrictions?

Suitable catering options will usually always be provided for you. If you have any specific dietary requirements or special meals, please notify us at the time of booking to ensure that we can cater for you.

Do I need travel insurance to travel with Nicko cruises?

Yes, it is a condition of booking with Light Blue Travel that all guests must have suitable travel insurance and you are not permitted to travel with us without it. Please see our Booking Conditions for more detailed information.

What facilities are available on board?

On board of VASCO DA GAMA, we have a range of public facilities for your wellbeing. This includes a fitness area with various cardio equipment as well as our wellness area with steam bath and sauna. The outdoor sports area includes a hard paddle tennis court and a jogging track plus table tennis, shuffleboard and darts. VASCO DA GAMA also has an outdoor pool with two whirlpools and a covered indoor pool. All these facilities are available for our guests to use for free. The beauty area provides massage and cosmetic treatment at an additional cost. You can find the opening times and price lists for these services in your cabin. In the various shops we have on board, you will find a range of clothing, jewellery, cosmetics and a selection of items for daily use. Please note that the shops are only permitted to open outside the 12-mile zone from shore due to customs regulations. Varying shows and entertainment programmes are performed in our “Hollywood” theatre.

What happens to my luggage during check-in? 

Luggage will be taken onboard by our crew and left outside your cabin door.

Is there a doctor available on board?

A doctor is available on-board VASCO DA GAMA to provide first-aid assistance in the event of accidents and emergencies. Billing for the doctors’ services and if, applicable, medication that has been administered, is carried out on board.

What do medical services cost on board? 

Costs will very much depend on the service. Our prices are displayed on board, however please be aware these can be quite expensive.

What can I not bring on board? 

Your luggage must only contain personal items. It is forbidden to bring weapons, knives, alcohol or drugs on board.

Will there be professional photographs taken throughout the voyage? 

Yes, we have a professional photo team on board.
