The island was home to Christopher Columbus who married the first governor’s daughter before discovering the New World. It’s contrast to Madeira is incredible, although it is just 40 kms away. It is more like a desert island with its wonderful climate and miles of golden sandy beach. It is no wonder that the Maderians choose the island as their favourite holiday destination.
Apart from relaxing, activities include a variety of watersports (such as windsurfing, scuba-diving and sailing), walking, cycling and horseriding. For those looking for a get away from it all beach holiday in peaceful surroundings, then Porto Santo is the place. All flights are via Madeira, and onwards either by ferry or plane, creating the opportunity for a “twin-centre” holiday in Madeira and Porto Santo allowing you the “best of both worlds”.
The island is just 16 miles square and its main attribute is the 5 mile golden beach where the tiny capital of Vila Baleira sits, and the majority of the islands 4,000 population reside. Vila Baleira has a handful of shops, three banks, several restaurants, and a good selection of hotels. There are also a number of restaurants scattered around the island that operate minibus transport for customers.
