Set amongst some of the finest houses on the island, former residences of noble families and wealthy merchants, Hotel Quinta do Monte has been elegantly restored to its former beauty as a five star hotel. The hotel is made up of two buildings, the traditional main house which houses the reception areas, and a new building on 4 levels incorporating the rooms, restaurant, tea room and gymnasium. Within the extensive gardens is the famous Monte Chapel which can be reached by a series of cobbled pathways leading through a mass of sub tropical flora.
A train line to Funchal centre once served the area of Monte with its quaint little streets. Now a cable car links the two although all visitors to Monte must experience a downhill ride in the chauffeur driven wicker toboggans!
